Occasionally it is associated with impairment of the health of the patient, such as indigestion, sprue-like diarrhoea, and anaemia, so that it is not to be lightly regarded. The resistance of the disease to treatment is well known, and is reflected in the numerous local remedies which have been recommended, of which the best are tincture of iodine, peroxide of hydrogen, and permanganate of potash, the latter in particular often markedly controlling the formation of pus, although it usually fails to completely cure the condition.
